Doug was born on May 24th, 1943, in Fort Dix, New Jersey, where his father was stationed during WW2, prior to moving back to Wisconsin. He grew up in Milwaukee and attended Pulaski High School, where he earned a varsity letter in Tennis, Football, and Wrestling. He attended UW-Milwaukee and lettered in Wrestling. He graduated from the Marquette University School of Dentistry in 1968 and completed a residency in Periodontics at the Clement J. Zablocki VA in Milwaukee. He continued as a faculty member at the Marquette Dental School and as a private practicer at West Allis. He joined the National Guard 128th Air Refueling Wing in 1961 and dedicated 23 years of service, retiring as a Lt Colonel. He loved sport. He had season tickets to the Marquette Men’s Basketball games since his student years. He was a part owner of a semipro football team, the West Allis Spartans, and won a league title. Throughout his life, he was known for his love of flying and golf. He became a private pilot in 1977 and flew family and friends to many destinations in his personal airplane. He shared his passion for golf with others when he started Par Excellence Golf Magazine in 1984 and the Wisconsin Golf Show in Milwaukee a few years later. He traveled globally, playing, photographing, and writing about an impressive number of golf courses. Through these global adventures, he met many friends, including his long-time significant other, Juliana Khoo. He spent many years splitting time between the US and Malaysia, where he could golf year-round. He continued to play golf with his family, including his grandsons, into this last fall.
