Eric danced his way into the stars on August 1, 2024, at the age of 76. He was born in 1948 in Peoria, Illinois to Donald and Hulda Mae Tangman and grew up in Elgin, Illinois.
He attended the University of Illinois, majoring in mathematics and computer science. It was at the University of Illinois that he was first introduced to square dancing.
Eric moved to Wisconsin in 1979, where he worked for many years as a computer systems analyst and software engineer, most recently with Northwestern Mutual®.
Upon moving to Milwaukee, Eric continued his interest in square dancing, beginning his calling career in 1985. He became widely known over the upper Midwest for his talent at calling and teaching Modern Western Square Dance. He wrote in an article for a square dance club, “From my first exposure to square dancing, I’ve had an interest in choreography. Just how does the caller move people around so effortlessly and then miraculously get everyone back together?” He continued to call regularly at club square dances throughout Wisconsin and northern Illinois, entertained with basic square dance calling at “fun nights” for schools, Scouts, and private parties. He continued to study choreography and teach new students and callers for the rest of his life. He was also a collector of historical square dance books and records and was the Director of the American Heritage Square Dancers, who performed many exhibitions of “old time” square dance, including performances at the Milwaukee Holiday Folk Fair.
Eric and Barbara Tangman were inducted into the WI Southeast Area Square Dance Hall of Fame in 2007, and Eric was inducted into the Square Dance Association Caller Hall of Fame in 2013.
Eric enjoyed bringing fun experiences to the many people that he touched over the years. Those who attended his dances will never forget his unique style of entertainment.
He greatly enjoyed traveling, having taken several Havey-Sauer trips and other travels most often with square dancers. He loved his and Barb’s little terriers, Missy & Thumper.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Kelsey), whom he met in one of his square dance classes, and by his brother, Darrell. He was very close to and filled in as Grandfather to Alyssa, Sophia, Gabrielle, and Lucas Henning.
