Gary L. Phelps, age 58, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at his home in Delafield
after a short battle with terminal cancer. He was born on April 30, 1965, in Stoughton to Elvera
and Alden Phelps. Gary is survived by his mother, Elvera E. Phelps, his brother, Brian A. Phelps,
his two children, Emma C. Phelps and Michael A. Phelps (who he raised with Suzanne K.
Phelps), and his wife, Deborah Phelps. He is preceded in death by his father, Alden O. Phelps.
Gary graduated from Stoughton High School in 1983 and entered the United States
Marine Corps. He completed his recruitment training at the recruit depot in San Diego,
California, before he was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii
from 1983 to 1987. He worked in supply and achieved the rank of Corporal E-4 within the
Brigade Service Support Group 1, 1st Marine Amphibious Brigade (BSSG-1 1st MAB). He later
received his associate’s degree in printing and publishing from Madison Area Technical College
in 1991. He was a purchasing and materials manager for over 24 years and was most recently
employed with Walter Tools.
Gary enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing card games, going out on boats, watching Packer
games, and drinking with all of his friends (especially at Curly’s). He talked to everyone he came
across, would always offer a helping hand to anyone who needed it, and created many
unbreakable bonds. Before his passing, Gary and Debbie were married while surrounded by their
closest family and friends. Gary, Emma, and Michael are excited to welcome Debbie and her two
children, Amanda Solaris and Chris Schuman, to the family. He will be missed by his family and
many others, and he will be remembered forever.
A funeral and celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, April 13th at 2:00pm at First
Congregational United Church of Christ in Hartland, with Pastor Jim Langreder officiating.
Visitation will start at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, please write a memory that you have of Gary in a card or online on the
obituary website for his family to remember his life with.
