James Hanus

October 14, 1936 — July 11, 2022

James C. Hanus, a gentleman with a heart of gold, left us on July 11th, 2022 at 85 years young. James was born in Milwaukee, WI to Bernadine (Berty) Ann and Clarence Rudolph Hanus. He enjoyed many trips to their family farm in Oakfield, Wisconsin where his relatives would gather to play Bohemian Polka Music. Whether dancing or playing a variety of accordions, James was always the life of the party.

James studied Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison before launching a career in lithography printmaking with W.A. Krueger, applying his creative talent to the covers of many well-known magazines.

He met Sandra Schulze, the love of his life, at a CYO dance and they were married for 58 loving years before her passing in 2018. A love of nature led them to their home in the Lake Country area where they lived for 48 years. James was the ultimate Father and was loved dearly by his daughters, Jenni and Kathy. A man of known integrity, he was a proud member of St. Charles Church.

James was an avid collector of Americana artifacts, Indian Motorcycles, vintage cars, and a never-ending list of collectibles landing him on the Antiques Roadshow a few times. James loved tracing family history, decades before the internet, and was an accomplished genealogist.

He is survived by his “Brunch Gang" siblings Mary (Fred) Hapke, Julie Hanus, Jerry Hanus, and John Hanus, and daughter Kathy Lanser. His daughter Jenni, greeted James in a heavenly reunion with Sandra.

James adored his great-grandchildren: Jackson Morrison and Olive Wandler, along with his cherished grandchildren: Joshua (Kelsey) Morrison, Lukas Behrndt, Ashlyn Behrndt, Nick (Eva) Lanser, Elle Lanser, Angelina (Conrad) Wandler, Edward Lanser, and Genevieve Lanser.

He is further survived by his in-laws: Sue (Jerry) Barth and Peter (Kathy) Schulze along with his nieces and nephews: Jane (Steve) Barwick, Ava (Nick) Cozzi, Beth Ciriacks, Ann Drosen, Joe (Denise) Hapke, Julie (Mark) Jalkanen, Meridian-Elizabeth (Eduardo) Jimenez-Schulze, Penny (Paul) Krier, Kim Sachen, Casey Schulze, Chance Schulze, Ken Schulze, Jr., Tim Schulze, and many dear friends.

James had enjoyed living at Terova Senior Living in Mequon, Wisconsin. His family shares their gratitude for the care he received from his caregivers.
