James A. Scharnell, known affectionately as Jim, was born on October 15, 1944, in West Allis, Wisconsin. He passed away unexpectedly on October 14, 2024, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, just one day shy of his 80th birthday.

Jim's life was marked by dedication and passion, both in his personal endeavors and professional career. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1967 to 1970, with a deployment to Vietnam from 1969-1970. This experience shaped his values and instilled in him a deep sense of duty and resilience.

After returning from military service, Jim pursued his education and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His commitment to his craft led him to become self-employed throughout his career. He and his wife, Janet, owned and operated a restaurant in Winter Park, Colorado, before establishing a successful catering company in Illinois. His culinary talents and entrepreneurial spirit left a significant impact on the communities he served, where he was known for his delicious food and welcoming atmosphere.

Jim was deeply passionate about life outside of work as well, enjoying hobbies such as golfing, boating, and hiking with his son, Anton. His love for photography allowed him to capture the beauty of the world around him, while attending symphonies and traveling globally enriched his experience and appreciation for culture and the arts.

He is survived by his son, Anton James Scharnell; and his sisters, Carol and Eileen Scharnell. Jim also joins in eternal rest with his father, Anton Scharnell; mother, Margaret (nee Bambach) Scharnell; life partner, Janet R. Scharnell; and brother, Richard Scharnell.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Jim will be remembered for his spirit, warmth, and the joy he brought to those who had the privilege of knowing him.
