Mary Therese Mcloone

June 30, 1929 — February 4, 2021

Mary Therese McLoone passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 4 at her home. She was 91.
A devoted wife and sister, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, community volunteer and devout Catholic, Mary left this world to rejoin the love of her life, Edward “Jim” McLoone, who passed away April 9, 2020.

Mary was born June 30, 1929 in Mankato, MN to Herbert and Gertrude Finley. She grew up in Janesville, MN and graduated from College of St. Teresa in Winona, MN. Jim attended St. Mary’s College in the same town, in the first chapter of a love story that lasted nearly 67 years. They married on June 13, 1953 at Saint Ann Catholic Church in Janesville.
They moved to Enid, OK where Jim served as a training officer for cadets at Vance Air Force Base. Mary was a schoolteacher in Enid and worked as a substitute teacher when they moved to Hampton, IA, where Jim got his first newspaper job. From there, they relocated for several newspaper positions. Mary’s efforts turned to raising a growing family and helping out with proofreading at the newspapers. They bought their first newspaper in Stewartville, MN. They relocated to Hartland, WI in 1960, where they started the Lake Country Reporter. Mary wrote her popular cooking column, Mary’s Medley, and travel columns for many years, but most of her time was dedicated to her eight children and their pursuits.
After selling the Lake Country Reporter in 1990, Mary and Jim spent winters in Naples, FL, where Mary volunteered teaching English to Spanish-speaking families. Mary helped out the St. Vincent de Paul organization at St. Charles Church in Hartland. For many years, Mary delivered Holy communion to shut-ins throughout the area up until last year. She loved being an active member of St. Charles Catholic Church.

Mary and Jim traveled the world, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary by taking their entire family – children and grandchildren – on a cruise to Alaska. Mary loved to follow the interests of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as they attended countless sporting events and school programs. In recent years, she kept tabs on everyone through Facebook. In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her daughter Bridget Mahony in 2014 and brother John Finley in 2017. She is survived by children Patrick (Vicki), Maureen (Thomas) Slattery, Sheila (Erik) Frye, Katie (John) Herrick, John (Lorena), Mary (Gary) Rolfs and James (Cathy); brother Joe Finley, sister Ann Johnson; sisters-in-law Gail (Bill) Allds and Pat (late John) Finley, 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Due to the pandemic, a private family Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, Feb. 11 at 11 AM at St. Charles Catholic church. The Funeral Mass will be live streamed at parish.stcharleshartland.com. Memorials can be directed to the St. Charles St. Vincent dePaul Society. Burial will be at St. Charles Cemetery in Hartland.
